La afinación binaria es una afinación basada en las potencias de dos.
En un monocordio, la octava superior de la nota raíz se obtiene cortando la cuerda en dos (como es habitual). En la afinación binaria, la quinta de la nota raíz se obtiene cortando la cuerda a la mitad de la distancia de la octava. La tercera, cortando la cuerda a la mitad de la distancia de la quinta. La segunda, cortando al cuerda a la mitad.
Una feliz coincidencia de esta afinación es que hay ocho notas en una octava. Claro que los principios que hacen a esta afinación se pueden seguir aplicando para que haya 16, 32, etc. notas en una octava, pero eso la haría cada vez menos práctica.
